1958 Givenchy for Talbott Reversible Cardigan

As one of the most renowned champions of separate, interchangeable pieces of clothing, the ease of Givenchy's designs offered a precursor to what we now know as a 'capsule wardrobe'. Ever an advocate for chic blouses, sweaters and cardigans, Givenchy started a collaboration with Talbott in 1955, a company known for their sweaters, made from their new acrylic fibre Orlon. It was a collaboration that lasted until 1959, during which time he produced several designs a year for the brand.
 
One of his most popular designs from the collaboration was this beautiful cardigan. Created in 1958 and photographed on Suzy Parker for Vogue, it proved to be as functional as it was chic - a pillar of Givenchy's ethos as a designer. Made from beautifully soft Orlon, the design was reversible and could be worn as a button-up cardigan, or a back-closing sweater with double bow accent.
This cardigan has retained its timelessness, as well as its luxurious feel. The fabric is still as soft as the day it was made, and the piece itself could very easily transition into a modern wadrobe.

This lovely cardigan, made from Dupont Acryllic Orlon, is still incredibly soft and supple all these years later. The seams and original buttons are all still intact, and the piece looks to be hardly worn. There is what seems to be a 2cm long ink mark at the shoulder (see photo), however this is hardly noticeable and does not detract from the loveliness of this cardigan!
