Balenciaga Autumn/Winter 1961 by Saks Fifth Avenue
For his Autumn/Winter 1961 haute couture collection, Balenciaga presented several beautifully tailored pieces - most popular of all, this stunning mustard yellow wool suit. Photographed in multiple publications, as well as being captured in rare video footage from the collection, this suit is incredibly well documented. The design was so popular that it was also picked up by international department stores which produced licensed copies from the same material and pattern.
This particular example of the suit was made for Saks Fifth Avenue - allowing their American clientele to dress themselves in the latest styles from Paris.
The cut of this suit is impeccable, with sharp princess seams, false pockets, notched collar and three-quarter length sleeves. At some point in its history, the skirt was altered: narrowing the sillhouette and removing the original pockets. But the beauty of this suit is by no means diminished; the colour is still vibrant and the cut remains timeless. A true piece of fashion history!

Sixty years later, this beautiful suit is still in very good and wearable condition. The jacket is in excellent condition, with only a little colour fading on the lining (see photo). The skirt was altered at some point to be narrower, with a small section of fabric piecing on the lining hem. However, this is not visible from the exterior. The wool is still vibrant and supple.
