Dior Autumn/Winter 1959 Copy by Mam'Selle
This beautiful dress is a real time capsule into the peak of 1950s Paris!
In the Autumn of 1959, Yves Saint Laurent presented his fourth couture collection for the house of Dior. The collection featured incredibly innovative silhouettes, including a dress of black jersey, with a bouffant bubble-hem skirt of black taffeta. The combination of a traditionally casual fabric with the luxurious silk was particularly bold, and the dress caught the attention of the press. This included Mam'selle in the USA, which was a Seventh Avenue junior label aimed at younger clientele, befitting this youthful new design.
This design was so popular it was selected by notable faces including Gail Jones (daughter of actress Lena Horne), and loyal Dior client Elizabeth Taylor, who purchased several pieces from this collection.
This copy by Mam'selle is very similar to Dior's original, with just a few small alterations. Their re-interpretation includes a small bow at the waist, not seen on the haute couture version, and two wing-like panels of fabric on the bubble skirt (see photos), which only heighten the dramatic silhouette of the dress.

Condition:
Very Good.
There are a few very minor holes in the bodice, no bigger than 0.5cm (see photos). The zip is in full working condition, and the skirt - flatlined with a synethic netting - still retains is volume beautifully. The seams are unfinished, and have frayed slightly as a result but are still completely intact.
