This is a truly remarkable piece. Designed by Yves Saint Laurent for his second-to-last haute couture collection for Christian Dior in 1960, it symbolises the creativity and innovation of the designer. The suit comprises a dress, with an unfitted polka-dot tabard bodice, and an incredible rounded jacket.

Dubbed 'The Silhouette of Tomorrow' (La Silhouette de Demain), Saint Laurent's Spring/Summer 1960 collection for Dior made headlines. Featuring several creations with a notably waist-less silhouette, the presentation seemingly went against the codes of the fashion house, which made its name for the introduction of the 'new look' in 1947 that championed accentuated waistlines and full skirts. It was this subversion from the popular styles that resulted in Saint Laurent being fired from his postion as creative director for Dior the following season.

This suit perfectly encapsulates the radical new style of this collection. Photographed on house model Alla Ilchun, its perhaps most remakable feature is the cut of the jacket, which balloons out at the hip, only to artfully taper in again at the hem. A labeled and numbered Patron Original, it was an ensemble made for a client in England.
