Givenchy Autumn/Winter 1962 by Suzy Perette
In the Autumn of 1962, Givenchy presented arguably one of his best and most popular collections. Featuring impeccable and interesting cuts, it showed real innovation - and this dress is no exception!
Made as a highly publicised licensed copy by Suzy Perette in New York, this dress was made for the avid followers of fashion in various shades and textiles: green floral silk, deep blue ottoman, and this version in pink Celanese matelassé.
Most interesting of all is the impeccable rounded seamlines of the dress, with the bodice front seams tapering up into an elegant arch, and those at the back curving around the armhole in a semi-circle. The dress is made with a built in net petticoat and a fixed sash bow in the same matelassé fabric.
Measurements:
Waist: 63.5cm/25"
Bust: Approx. 98cm/38.5" (with a kimono sleeve, the bust is slightly freer)
Hips: 100cm/39.5"
Shoulder to Hem: 107cm/42"
Condition:
Good.
This dress is still incredibly beautiful and still very wearible, with only a few flaws. The seams are still all intact with no repairs needed, as is the original built-in petticoat. The only fault in the condition of this dress is the right shoulder line, which, most likely due to sun exposure, has faded (see photos). Having spoken to a conservator it seems this fading would be difficult to reverse, however it certainly does not take away from the beauty of this dress!
